Pan African Congress, North American Delegation Statement on Ethiopia

The Pan African Congress, North American Delegation stands in solidarity with Ethiopian families that have lost and continue to lose their loved ones. Over the last few weeks, the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray Regional government have been caught in armed conflict. The current situation in Ethiopia stems from histories of war, decades of elite rule and control over politics and economy, and dire regional economic, environmental, and social conditions. Although the Federal government has reported the completion of the conflict’s final phase, armed conflict rages in many parts of the country. The Pan African Congress North American Delegation supports calls for a cease fire and the gradual demilitarization of Ethiopia.

The conflict has already caused thousands to migrate, lose their homes, and their livelihood. Considering the locust swarms, drought patterns, and other socioeconomic conjunctures facing Ethiopia and the Eastern region of Africa, we urge that the lives of the Ethiopian people be the center and starting point for safety, reconciliation, and development. Ethiopia has played an important and symbolic role in the Pan African world. It is also not the first time that global Africans in the diaspora have mobilized their resources to rally for peace and transformation in Ethiopia. We support and find solace in the Pan African spirit of African peoples, in the horn of Africa, who are currently providing assistance to their fellow Ethiopians. Our delegation calls for increased efforts from the African Union in mediating and providing humanitarian relief to those displaced and affected.
