GPAM Statement on Mali and Burkina Faso Federation

Mali and Burkina Faso have been locked in an anti-imperialist struggle against France. Both societies have long histories of mobilizing popular forces for African self-rule. In the case of Mali, the workers, peasants, and cultural workers, have been in the forefront of struggles for self-determination. The Burkinabe people have also been engaged in a constant struggle to challenge imperialism and its manifestations. In both cases, imperial forces have enabled terrorism and terrorists to destabilize the people.

Recently, the military in both countries have intervened to represent themselves as anti-imperialists. In the process, they have been forced to confront French imperialism and manipulations. In the midst of this confrontation with France and French imperialism, both countries have called for the expulsion of France and French influence from their society. Importantly, both societies are looking for alternatives to the CFA and France’s financial domination. This search for financial autonomy has led to the calls for a Federation between Mali and Burkina Faso.

The Global Pan African Movement, North America, supports the call for a federation between Mali and Burkina Faso. Additionally, GPAM supports the call for the elevation of the ideas of Thomas Sankara in the federated society of Mali and Burkina Faso.
