On August 1, 2020, the North American Delegation of the Pan African Congress will host a one-day online symposium in recognition of the abolition of slavery across the British Empire on August 1, 1834.

Recognizing the centrality of music to the cultural practices of African people around the world, this symposium will examine the role of music as a liberatory force and emancipatory balm, critical to sustaining individuals, communities, and movements for social and political transformation throughout the Black world.

This program will be 90 minutes and feature presentations by Rick Wright (R&B/Soul), Fanon Che Wilkins (Music and Movements in the Black World), and Jessica Ann Mitchell Aiwuyor (Hip-hop to Afrobeats) and will explore freedom and emancipation in music over the last 40 years in an effort create a critical dialogue and with symposium participants from around the world.
